YOUR SUPPORT = SUCCESS Meet Esther...In the U.S. on a work visa, Esther had left her whole family and way of life behind. She never had a boyfriend before. But then she met the American man who would eventually become her husband. He was so friendly and treated her well. Soon they were married and Esther was caring for his young son and preparing to have a child with her new love. He offered to file for a green card on her behalf – an offer she gladly accepted. He offered to teach her to drive – she was excited at the prospect. She thought everything was fine. But slowly, he started to change. First, it was hardly noticeable. He gave her a couple of driving lessons, then stopped. He decided that he would just take her where she needed to go. He stopped going to church with her. An angry side to his personality began to emerge, a frightening and unexpected turn of events. Soon, Esther lost her job because he didn’t file her paperwork with immigration as he promised. He assured her it was ok and that he could provide for her. She could stay home and take care of his son – and eventually their newborn. A miscarriage became a milestone in their relationship when his abusive behavior reached new levels. In addition to preventing her from working, or driving, he now told her she couldn’t go to church anymore AND he cut her off from her family completely. He gave her an STD and blamed it on her. His temper was out of control. For months he berated her, call her names, and scream at her. He twisted every word and every circumstance to make her feel that everything she did was wrong. She began to change. The words that he used were so powerful and she was so isolated that eventually her self-confidence and self-worth were gone. She was afraid all the time. Afraid she’d do or say something to set him off. Afraid that he would rape her, again. The things he and his family said and the way they treated her made her feel that she was exaggerating; that she was over-reacting. But she wouldn’t sleep because she was always watching the door, afraid he would come in and hurt her. She was so terrified sometimes she would sleep outside. She felt stuck. She couldn’t leave the country to go home to her family because of the immigration problem he had caused. She had no one here to confide in. After months of psychological abuse and control, one day the fear became too great and she reached out for help. Her neighbor brought her to the Family Services Women and Children’s Shelter. Esther says that she didn’t expect the warm welcome that she received. She immediately felt safe and part of a new family. The common experiences of the women help them to bond and support each other through such terrible times. Esther is now receiving counseling at the Shelter and is working with Family Services’ Legal Advocate and a lawyer from Lone Star Legal Aid to sort out her immigration status. She hopes to find her own apartment soon and start her life again. Her self-esteem is slowing returning. “I don’t have to look at the floor when I speak,” she says. “I know he’ll never hurt me again; he’ll never call me those things ever again.” “We need to blaze a trail to let all women know that help is out there.” $44 provides 24 hours of emergency shelter and support services for one victim of domestic violence.
